At-Risk Contingent Employment in Anthropology

Introduction

The purpose of this form is to collect basic information about people who wish to join the AAA’s virtual community for contingent (i.e., non-tenure track) faculty. We want to focus community membership largely among individuals with precarious faculty appointments (regardless of AAA member status), allowing us to foster a space where members can converse freely about issues of concern without feeling judged or monitored by colleagues and supervisors. For this reason, every prospective participant is asked to provide a reason why they wish to join.

The rest of the questions here are optional—you may choose whether you wish to respond to each one. If you provide responses, they will only be made available to the members of the AAA Working Group on Non-Tenure Track Faculty Employment. We may use your responses in reports for the AAA Executive Board, membership, or the general public, but only in an anonymized or aggregated form. We will never release your name or other personally identifying information.

Members of the Working Group will also be present and recognizable as virtual participant observers in the online community. Through our presence in this virtual space, we hope to learn more about the issues you face and to find ways that the AAA can better support anthropologists with precarious employment. Your participation in the online community will be archived in the forum, but will be password-protected and only available to other members of the community. Any ethnographic reports we write based on this material will be composed in a way that protects members’ privacy as much as possible, and if we wish to quote you at length, we will consult with you prior to publication. We cannot make any such promises on behalf of other community members, however, and there is always the possibility that they may forward your contributions to other people outside of the online community.
